Goodheart's Law in Sport

Goodheart’s Law says that when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. In collegiate and professional weight rooms and sport combines, this concept is rampant. They test max lifts, straight line speed, and vertical jump for example, all of which the athletes train for specifically ahead of time. Now, is it that the best players are the ones who perform best in these tests or is it that those who make it to the highest levels pass these tests by training specifically for them?

Don’t get us wrong, the ability to perform those tasks at a high level is never a weakness. While the amount of times you can bench 225lbs may not always directly translate to the football field, it could get you on the field. At DISTRICT Training, we understand this reality. We help you both be able to perform better on the field in the less measured areas like ground reaction time, core stability, or mental acuity as well as the areas that you'll be tested on in college or the pros. Luckily these tested metrics also help you become a better athlete, so not a moment is wasted when focusing on them, they just aren't always the deciding factor.

We help you play better for longer on the field, court, or track, as well as keep you ready for when you need to put up big numbers in the weight room.

There are many aspects involved in achieving elite athleticism. While combine tests and weight room PRs have their role in creating a well rounded athlete, obsessing over them can detract from long term success. By following a well rounded training program prioritizing:

  • Speed, strength, and power development

  • Triplanar and sport specific movements

  • High quality nutrition and recovery

We help you become the most capable athlete you can be both in all areas of sport.
